Biography

Everyone has come to recognize Julia Roberts' million-dollar smile. It's that smile, coupled with talent and remarkable charm, which led Julia Roberts to become one of the highest-paid actresses in Hollywood and one of the most recognizable faces in the world.

Julie Fiona Roberts was born on October 28, 1967, in Smyrna, Georgia. The daughter of a vacuum salesman and a church secretary, Julia is not the only Roberts sibling to pursue an acting career. Her brother and sister were also aspiring actors, albeit not as famous as Julia -- in fact, few even know their names.

Julia roberts the actress

As a 17-year-old girl with big dreams, Julia headed to the Big Apple to join her actress sister, Lisa. Starting out as a model in order to make a living, Julia took acting classes on the side in order to perfect her trade. She finally received her big break after her brother, B-movie actor Eric Roberts, convinced a director to cast his little sister in the film Blood Red (1989).

Fours years passed between the production of Blood Red and its release, over the span of which Julia found television work on such series as Crime Story and Miami Vice. In 1988, she landed roles in the films Satisfaction and Mystic Pizza. Her role in the latter did not go unnoticed, and audiences and critics alike would soon remember the name Julia Roberts (who actually changed her name from Julie to Julia when she applied for a SAG card, to distinguish herself from another actress registered under the same name). In 1990, Oscar acknowledged Julia's work in Steel Magnolias, co-starring Sally Field and Dolly Parton, by honoring her with a nomination for Best Supporting Actress.

Julia roberts is pretty woman

No role to that date, however, approached the success of 1990's Pretty Woman. Julia's portrayal of prostitute turned princess Vivian Ward was so flawless that it seemed as though the role was written for her (it wasn't). This performance garnered her a second Oscar nomination, this time for Best Actress, and cemented Julia as a Hollywood fixture.

After Pretty Woman, Julia's success at the box office continued with the thrillers Flatliners (1990) and Sleeping with the Enemy (1991), but then her film career took a turn for the worse. The tearjerker Dying Young (1991) and Steven Spielberg's Peter Pan adaptation Hook (1991) were box-office and critical disasters.

While Julia's film career was experiencing highs and subsequent lows, her romantic life was taking a similar bumpy ride. Her wedding to Kiefer Sutherland was canceled just days before the set date, and only a few days later she was romantically linked to actor Jason Patric.

Julia roberts in the pelican brief

At this time, Julia was in the midst of a two-year film hiatus, interrupted by a cameo in Robert Altman's The Player. Her 1993 role in The Pelican Brief, co-starring Denzel Washington, marked Julia's Hollywood comeback. The following years were marked with such hits as 1995's Something to Talk About and 1996's Everyone Says I Love You, along with misses like 1994's Ready To Wear and I Love Trouble, and 1996's Mary Reilly.

On a personal note, Julia Roberts' love life again made headlines, but this time because of her marriage to country star Lyle Lovett. They were married from June 1993 to March 1995, and their union raised many eyebrows.

By 1997, the Julia Roberts everyone loved was back in full form. Her role in the summer hit My Best Friend's Wedding along with Dermot Mulroney and Cameron Diaz which earned her a Best Actress Golden Globe nomination and marked the start of a whole new kind of success for Julia. That same year, she co-starred with Mel Gibson in Conspiracy Theory.

Stepmom also fared well, but it was Julia's only project of 1998. The following year she came back with a vengeance with two summer blockbusters: Notting Hill, in the role of a world-famous movie actress (not much of a character stretch) with co-star Brit-hunk Hugh Grant, and Runaway Bride (1999), which re-teamed her with Richard Gere.

Erin brockovich leads to oscar

But it was her role as a single mother who takes on a massive corporation in 2000's Erin Brockovich that launched Julia to the next tier. This job bumped Julia into the $20 million club, along with heavy hitters Tom Cruise and Jim Carrey, and earned her the Best Actress Oscar, Golden Globe and SAG Award.

While 2001 brought disappointments in the form of The Mexican, with James Gandolfini and America's Sweethearts with Billy Crystal and Christopher Walken, Julia's career has remained, for the most part, steady with successes (including 2001's Ocean's Eleven). This stability comes thanks in part to director/producer Steven Soderbergh, who cast Julia in Erin Brockovich and Ocean's Eleven, among others.

2004 was a big year for Julia, with two December movie releases -- the drama Closer with co-stars Natalie Portman, Jude Law and Clive Owen, and the sequel Ocean's Twelve (which is actually the only sequel she has ever appeared in) with the star-studded cast including Brad Pitt, Catherine Zeta-Jones, George Clooney, and Andy Garcia. Julia was unable to attend the premieres or celebrity junkets for these two flicks, as she game birth to twins on November 28, 2004. Although they were due January 2005, Julia had remained on bed rest when she gave birth to son Phinnaeus Walter and daughter Hazel Patricia.

After a three-year romance with actor Benjamin Bratt, Julia began dating cinematographer Daniel Moder. They were married in a surprise midnight ceremony on July 4, 2002.

Julia roberts in ant bully and charlotte's web

In 2006, she added the Warner Bros. animated film Ant Bully to her resume -- lending her voice to the ant character Hova. Her voice co-stars, Nicolas Cage and Meryl Streep also joined the colony.

After Ant Bully, Julia took on another children's film as the leading arachnid -- the voice of Charlotte, the spider -- in Charlotte's Web (2006). While the classic children's tale has been redone countless times, Julia brought a new life to the eight-legged creature. John Cleese, Oprah Winfrey and Kathy Bates also felt the farm life was for them and also lent their voices to the family film.

From children's films to political dramas, Julia seems to be able to do it all. In the 2007 film, Charlie Wilson's War, Julia takes on the drama with co-stars Tom Hanks and Philip Seymour Hoffman.

Personal Quotes

I enjoy hats. And when one has filthy hair, that is a good accessory.

I'm too tall to be a girl, I never had enough dresses to be a lady, I wouldn't call myself a woman. I'd say I'm somewhere between a chick and a broad.

My real hair color is kind of a dark blonde. Now I just have mood hair.

(From 1998 interview) "I've sort of grown into my cuteness."

"We all need to take a deep breath and think about being a Bush daughter and having that cross to bear. I'd go out and have a couple of drinks, too" - about President George W. Bush's daughters being caught with alcohol as minors.

"It doesn't bring out the Einstein moment that you hoped it would."-- Julia Roberts, on forgetting to include the real-life Erin Brockovich-Ellis in her Academy Award acceptance speech.

You know I'm like a total geek, right? First of all, I sit on the set and knit. It's a very social hobby, as opposed to reading at work - I can chat with people and still be fully engaged.

"He's embarrassing, he's not my president. He will never be my president" - talking about President George W. Bush.

I'm just an ordinary person who has an extraordinary job.

"I get dressed up like a doll, a nice man puts lipstick on my lips and I say words - it's deeply satisfying" - on the essence of her job

On why she will never do a nude scene: "I just don't feel that my algebra teacher should ever know what my butt looks like."

You can be true to the character all you want, but you've go to go home with yourself.

I think it's dangerous to talk in the big generalities of sexism and ageism and face lift-isms. You really have to speak only from your own experience. And my experience so far has been ridiculously nice. Yeah, do the boys get paid more? Yes. But do we all get paid too much? Yes. I'm confused at what I'm supposed to complain about.

I wouldn't do nudity in films. To act with my clothes on is a performance. To act with my clothes off is a documentary.

It's heaven truly... we were rehearsing one day, and we had just moved into the theater and it was dark out here, and I was on stage, and all of the sudden, I hear, 'Mama!' And Hazel had come in and in the dark just to hear this little voice, and it's incredibly amazing.

I think one of the smartest things I ever did for my career was not working for two years in the early 90s. I was being offered a lot of different movies but I just didn't see the point of any of them. People would say to me "How can you just be passing on all those things?" And my response was "Tell me a movie you've seen in the past year that I should have made."

"The first time I felt I was famous was when I went to the movies with my mom. I had gone to the loo, and someone in the bathroom said in a very loud voice, 'Girl in stall No. 1, were you in Mystic Pizza (1988)? I paused and I said, yeah that was me." - (People Magazine 8/22/99)

Biography

Amanda Laura Bynes was born on April 3, 1986, in Thousand Oaks, California. One could perhaps attribute her flair for comedy to her father, Rick, a dentist and comedy enthusiast who encouraged Amanda and her siblings to perform.

As a young thespian, Bynes starred in community productions of plays like To Kill a Mockingbird, The Music Man and The Secret Garden, and became initiated into the art of getting laughs during classes at comedy "camps" like The Comedy Store and the Laugh Factory, both in Los Angeles. At the age of 10, she performed at a Laugh Factory kids' comedy showcase and was immediately approached by an executive from the Nickelodeon television network, and the laughs haven't stopped since.

Amanda bynes stars in all that
Nickelodeon cast Amanda Bynes in a sketch-comedy series called All That, where she frequently stole the show from her fellow cast members. She became well known for her spirited role in "Ask Ashley," a sketch about an advice columnist. Audiences began to remark -- as they still do today -- that she has a knack for comic timing, in the vein of female comedic greats like Lucille Ball and Tracey Ullman.

After four great years on the program -- during which time she won no less than four Kids' Choice Awards -- she was awarded her own show, appropriately titled The Amanda Show. Essentially, it was All That, with all Amanda. For three seasons it was the highest-rated live-action show on Nickelodeon.

As with many young stars, Amanda Bynes' career has benefited from the influence of a mentor. Dan Schneider was the creator of both of her hit Nickelodeon shows, so it follows that he was the impetus and screenwriter behind Big Fat Liar, her 2002 film debut. Although Frankie Muniz from TV's Malcolm in the Middle was the movie's star attraction, audiences agree that Amanda's character was the funnier one, thanks to her physical comedy and hilarious impersonations.

Meanwhile, she was moving into the spotlight on her own. In 2002, the WB network began airing the sitcom What I Like About You, which had been in the works for some time as a vehicle for Amanda. She stars as a teenage girl who moves in with her older sister in New York City and, naturally, turns her sister's world upside down.

In 2003, Amanda Bynes could be seen in her first leading role (in only her second film) in What a Girl Wants, which is about an American teen in search of her father in London, England. Two years later, she appeared in the flicks Robots and Lovewrecked. In 2006, she had a role in She's The Man, and the following year Amanda appeared in Sydney White and the hit movie/musical Hairspray.

That same year, in 2007, Amanda Bynes signed a five-year deal with Steve & Barry's to create her own clothing collection, Dear.
